PL4S grab gold in girls tournament
The Swans Community Trust’s Premier League 4 Sport project claimed top spot at a recent table tennis tournament for girls held in Birmingham.
The tournament saw PL4S projects from a range of clubs take part – including Premier League Champions Leicester – but it was the Swans that grabbed the glory.
In addition to Erin Sandison and Catrin Daniels, both aged 14, reaching the Semi Finals of the Plate, 15-year-old Cerys Gruneberg won the Final of the Cup and was crowned the champion of the tournament.
“The girls had a fun time playing girls from other football teams and I’d like to congratulate Cerys for winning the competition. She showed great skill and composure in the final game,” said Craig Richards, our PL4Sport Project Coordinator.
Organised by This Girl Can and supported by Table Tennis England, the tournament came during the Swans’ celebrations for International Women’s Day and also witnessed Olympian and England Number 1, Kelly Sibley, attend to give tips and coach the girls, before playing an exhibition match.
“It was great for the girls to represent Swansea City AFC in a different sport to what the club is known for,” Craig continued.
Running weekly table tennis sessions, Premier League 4 Sport also offers affordable and free coaching in tennis, basketball and hockey for young people aged between 13 and 19 years old at a range of venues throughout Swansea and its surrounding communities.
