Swans to compete in Premier League 4 Sport National Tennis Competition

Twenty Premier League and Football League clubs will be bringing teams of representatives to the National Tennis Centre on Thursday 7 July to take part in the annual Premier League 4 Sport National Tennis Competition.

This is the fourth year of the partnership between the Premier League and British Tennis and over 5,600 young people have engaged in the Premier League 4 Sport Tennis sessions run by Premier League and Football League clubs, since its introduction to the Premier League 4 Sport programme in 2013.

The event has been running for three years and sees each Premier League and Football League club taking part being represented by two male and two female players, aged between 14 and 16, who will compete in timed touchtennis matches. Each of the teams will take part in a round-robin competition before knockout rounds that will ultimately decide the winners and runners up. Following the Finals, all participants will be taken to the All England Club at Wimbledon, giving them the chance to see world-class player’s close-up.

Twenty-one Premier League and Football League clubs, including Swansea City AFC, have delivered Tennis sessions this year as part of the Premier League 4 Sport programme. The growth in club numbers has also had a positive effect on female participation. 41% of the total number of the participants taking part in club tennis satellite sessions are female.

The Premier League 4 Sport programme sees football clubs use the power of their club badge to engage young people from local communities to take part in sports sessions that are not football-specific. Twelve sports now make up the offer from clubs, which include: Tennis, Athletics and Boxing.

Siobhan Atkinson, Community Development Executive, Premier League stated:

“It is great to see the continued positive effect that the partnership between British Tennis and the Premier League is having as we host our third annual Tennis Competition together during Wimbledon fortnight.

The Premier League 4 Sport programme continues to grow and develop, this due in part to the great work by British Tennis and our clubs in working together to engage young people. Over 3,750 tennis satellite sessions have taken place nationwide over the past twelve months because of this great partnership.

“To be able to use the world-class range of courts at the National Tennis Centre again for this Premier League 4 Sport Tournament is tremendous for the young people involved and I’m sure it is something that they will remember for a long time to come."
