Girls only sessions prove popular

Girls from YGG Bryniago were yesterday presented with certificates by club legend Lee Trundle after successfully completing a football coaching course.

Run by our Premier League Schools project, in conjunction with the Urdd and the Welsh Football Trust, the Welsh language sessions have been running throughout the school year and have helped to increase participation in football amongst girls in the area.

“The girls have attended an after school club for the past year and have improved dramatically over the course of the season,” said Thomas Williams, the PL Schools’ Project Co-ordinator.

“All the girls in the team come to the sessions after school on a Friday and most of the girls in the team had not played football before we set it up,” he continued. “It’s a big achievement for them, and us, in such a short space of time.”

The after school club has not only proved popular with the students of YGG Bryniago, but also with other schools where PL Schools runs the sessions, such as Ysgol Llwynderw.

The sessions at Ysgol Llwynderw have proved so beneficial to the girls’ footballing development that their team has now reached the Urdd National Final being held in Aberystwyth.

In addition to these two schools, the partnership with the Urdd and the Welsh Football Trust has engaged with a total of over 500 girls throughout our local communities.
