Swans host Walking Football tournament
Yesterday saw the Swans Community Trust’s inaugural Walking Football tournament following a flourishing season for the initiative.
Held at Llandarcy Academy of Sport, the tournament saw teams from across Wales take part in the tournament and it was a huge success.
“This is our first tournament and it’s been a great day,” said the project’s co-ordinator, Leonne Daniel.
“It’s been amazing to have so many Walking Football teams take part from across the country,” he continued.
Organised by our Hearty Lives project, the tournament saw teams from a host of Walking Football programmes, including two Swans teams named Team Curtis and Team Trundle, take part, as well as witnessing an array of ages and abilities getting involved.
Team Curtis dropped in the group stages and Team Trundle made it to the Semis but missed out on a place in the Final after a penalty shootout against Pontypridd that went to sudden death.
Taking the crown however were Cardiff City who beat Pontypridd 1-0 in the Final after going to extra time.
Despite not coming out on top, the Swansea players weren’t disheartened and revelled in the great atmosphere of the day.
“It’s the fourth and biggest tournament we’ve been to,” said Terry McCumiskey of Team Curtis, who also volunteers with the programme. “It’s been great. We all think we’re 21 the minute we get on the pitch,” he continued.
The tournament was then capped off with an exhibition match that pitted club ambassador Lee Trundle and a selection of players against the coaches and volunteers from Neath Port Talbot College who help run the programme.
“A huge congratulations to Cardiff and a massive thank you to Lee and the students who organised the tournament,” added Leonne. “I’d also like to thank everyone who participated and Neath Port Talbot College for allowing us to use their venue and for all their support in helping us to make Walking Football a success.
If you’re looking to get your heart pumping but aren’t up for a full 90 minutes, then Walking Football could be the activity for you, and we now run sessions at four different venues.
