Young tennis players represent Swans at national tournament
The Premier League 4 Sport programme reached its climax this summer as a group of young tennis enthusiasts travelled down to London to take part it in the annual Premier League 4 Sport Tennis competition.
Cory Choudhury, Elanor Pearce, Joseff Nicholls-De-Freitas and Menna Wooldridge were the lucky four selected to represent the Swans, accompanied by young volunteer Lara Prashad, Tennis coach Sam Munson and PL4S coordinator Tom Williams.
Team Swansea began their day at the National Tennis Centre, in Roehampton, Surrey, meeting former US Open finalist Greg Rudsedski, before playing mini-tennis on the same courts used by the country’s top professionals where they competed against other top Premier League teams including Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
The team performed brilliantly throughout, before eventually being knocked out at the quarter-final stage.
The morning was an overwhelming success with a number of representatives from various teams and the Premier League complimenting team Swansea on their sportsmanship, commitment and overall attitude.
Joseff commented on how much he enjoyed himself, saying, “I loved being here in my Swansea Kit, representing the Swans and getting the chance to play other teams from the Premier League”.
The team rounded off the occasion with a trip to the All-England club to watch Wimbledon, a fantastic experience for the whole team.
“It’s been brilliant getting to go to Wimbledon, it’s a great place, somewhere I’ve never been before and somewhere I don’t think I would ever have gone so I’m really grateful to Swansea City and the PL4S project for giving me the opportunity to be here,” said Lara Prashad, who came agonisingly close to winning the girls competition the previous year as a competitor.
The Premier League 4 Sport project aims to offer young people more opportunities to try a range of sporting activities. As part of the project, new sport sessions will be created throughout the Swansea, Neath and Carmarthen area, offering young people the chance to try different sports such as Tennis, Hockey, Basketball and Table Tennis in an enjoyable and stress-free environment.
All young people aged 14-19 are welcome, regardless of their sporting ability with prizes such as signed shirts and other official Swansea City AFC merchandise on offer to those who attend regularly.
“These PL4S sessions are for everybody, not just those who are sporty. The sessions are fun and enjoyable for everyone and are delivered in a relaxed environment where competition is available but not necessary. I would encourage everyone, regardless of their sporting ability, to come along, have a go, have fun and be part of the Swansea City AFC sporting family,” said Tom Williams.
There will also be opportunities for young people to represent Swansea City AFC in each sport at national championships where they will compete against other Premier League clubs.
The Premier League 4 Sport programme continues to grow and offer more young people throughout Swansea exciting opportunities such as this.
