Premier League 4 Sport
Premier League 4 Sport is a funded through the Premier League Charitable Fund.
The aim of the project is to use the appeal and the brand image of Swansea City AFC and the Premier League to encourage more young people into sport.
The project targets four specific sports (Hockey, Tennis, Table Tennis and Basketball) and offers free regular sessions at various locations across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and South West Wales.
All young people aged 11-19 are welcome, regardless of their sporting ability (although the programme primarily targets those aged 14+) with prizes such as shirts and other official Swansea City AFC merchandise on offer to those who attend regularly. There are also opportunities for young people to represent Swansea City AFC in each sport at national championships where they will compete against other Premier League clubs.
The sessions are fun and enjoyable for everyone and are delivered in a stress-free environment where competition is available but not necessary.
The overall aim of the project is to feed the existing local sports club with new participants. This is achieved through the creation of multiple ‘satellite’ sessions that will offer participants easy access, low cost sport sessions. These sessions will act as introductory sessions with a more relaxed environment compared to traditional club based sessions (the use of phones will be permitted and music can be played). The emphasis is on enjoyment and social interaction rather than technical development.
Once participants feel confident and competent enough and they wish to further their skills, they can be signposted to their nearest hub club.
To date, the project has engaged with over 786 young people, many of whom were not regularly participating in sport before becoming involved in the project.
